Why automatic suits NW London

Fewer things to think about, on roads that give you plenty

North-West London is not the gentlest place to learn. It has the North Circular, the A5 through Kilburn and Colindale, the hills of Hampstead and Mill Hill, and the junctions around Brent Cross. An automatic takes gear changes and stalling out of the picture, so the hard parts get your whole mind.

Hills without the dread

Hampstead, Mill Hill and the climb up from Golders Green are where manual learners stall with a queue behind them. In an automatic a hill start is a foot on the brake and a foot on the accelerator, and the lesson moves on to what actually matters: observation and position.

Stop-start on the A5 and the A406

Kilburn High Road, the Edgware Road and the North Circular around Brent Cross are all crawl-then-go. With no clutch to work, you keep your eyes up and your following distance sensible instead of hunting for the biting point every twenty metres.

Ready for Hendon or Mill Hill

Both North-West London test centres are on our list. Once your test is booked with the DVSA, lessons are planned around that centre, and the booking wizard offers a mock test there in the automatic you have been learning in.

Worth knowing first

What an automatic licence does and does not cover

It covers

Every automatic car, including hybrids and every fully electric car.
The same DVSA test, on the same routes, to the same standard as a manual pass.
Adding manual later by taking a manual practical test, with no second theory test.

It does not cover

Driving a manual car. That includes a hire car that turns out to be manual, a friend’s car, or a job that hands you a manual van.

If you are not sure which to learn, message us on WhatsApp and describe how you expect to drive. You will get an honest answer, and sometimes that answer is “learn manual”.

Common questions

Automatic lessons in NW London: FAQs

Do you have automatic instructors in North-West London?

Kilburn, West Hampstead, Queen’s Park, Hendon, Brent Cross, Colindale, Mill Hill, Golders Green, Hampstead and St John’s Wood are all on our areas list. The honest way to check is the guided booking: choose “Automatic”, enter your postcode, and you see exactly who covers it and when. If no one does yet, it tells you, and WhatsApp will give you a straight answer too.

Is automatic more expensive than manual here?

No. £47.50 an hour in either, taught in 2-hour lessons, with the same first-lesson prices of £75 (new to driving) and £85 (had lessons before) and the same block packages.

Can I take my automatic test at Hendon or Mill Hill?

Yes. You book the test with the DVSA at whichever centre you prefer, and your lessons are planned around it. The test is identical to the manual one apart from there being no gear-related faults to pick up.

I have been learning manual and want to switch. Do I start again?

No. Everything you have learned about observation, junctions, roundabouts and manoeuvres carries straight over. Book the £85 “had lessons before” first lesson, tell your instructor where you got to, and you pick up from there.

Can I request a female automatic instructor?

Yes. Say so on WhatsApp or when you book and we match you where we can; when a female instructor is taking online bookings, the guided booking asks the question itself and lists her first. Full details on our female driving instructor page.
