Driving in Kensington

What driving in Kensington teaches you

The royal borough runs at 20mph and rewards tidy, deliberate driving, and it happens to contain some of the best teaching roads in London, from a genuine hill to a famous shared-space street.

The Kensington Church Street hill

A real incline from the High Street up to Notting Hill Gate: hill starts, clutch control and holding your position in queueing traffic, practised in a dual-controlled car until it’s boring.

Cromwell Road & the A4

A multi-lane urban artery with museum coach traffic: lane discipline, mirror routines and joining faster traffic smoothly. Confidence here carries straight onto any test route’s dual carriageway.

Exhibition Road’s shared space

One of London’s best-known shared-surface streets, where cars and pedestrians negotiate by eye. Reading unmarked space is pure hazard perception, the judgement examiners most like to see.

Common questions

Driving lessons in Kensington: FAQs

Kensington High Street looks intimidating. Will I be driving it on day one?

No. First lessons start on the quieter garden-square streets where the sight lines are generous. The High Street comes when the basics are automatic. Once you can read cyclists, bus stops and crossings there, most test routes feel calm.

How do lessons handle the A4 and Cromwell Road?

Deliberately, and not immediately. Multi-lane dual carriageway needs lane discipline and proper mirror work first. When you are ready it becomes the most useful road you will learn on, because it is the same skill every test route asks for at a lower speed.

Which test centre do learners in W8 use?

There is none in Kensington. Isleworth is the usual choice from W8 and SW7, with Hendon and Mill Hill also common; we teach whichever routes match your booking, and we cover Greenford, Pinner and Wood Green too.

How much are driving lessons in Kensington?

£47.50 an hour, taught in 2-hour lessons. Your first is £75 new, £85 if you have driven before. Full list on the prices page.

Where will my very first lesson start?

In the garden squares off Kensington Church Street, where sight lines are long and traffic is light. The High Street, Gloucester Road and the A4 come once the basics stop needing your attention.
